Luminarias

We make our luminairas in the USA for consistent quality and value.

Our fire retardant, die cut luminaria bags are 10 1/8" tall x 5 1/2" wide by 3 1/2" deep.  We specify that our paper is made fire retardant with mateials approved by the USDA for dry food packaging, so they make great gift bags for baked goods and other food products.

Our 50# basis weight paper is heavy enough to stand up to light drizzle and snow.

Please keep in mind that while meant to be used as luminarias, that's why they are made of fire retardant paper, all of our luminarias are great to use as center pieces with shred, tissue paper, balloons, etc. (No candles in center pieces please)

While our luminarias are fire retardant, please keep in mind too that they are meant for outdoor use only by adults and must be kept away from any flammable objects.

We offer awareness ribbon, graduation (mortar board), luau (palm, tropical fish, flamingo), over-the-hill/birthday (40, 50, 60), wedding (bells, hearts, Star of David), Halloween -out of stock, Christmas (candles & holly, Christmas bells, Christmas tree), and general party (stars) designs.

We've received so many questions over the years about how neighborhoods might coordinate various luminaria programs that we've developed "crib" sheet and hope the following comments are of interest:

Budgets                        Some neighborhoods have money in their annual budget for luminarias.  Others charge each homeowner by the set (10, 12, 15, 20 bags and/or candles) for the cost of the program.  Some make a small profit to put in the association’s account.  Others make enough to generate considerable charitable donations.

Cups                            KAMA provides cups in which candles may be burned. (Votive candle wax needs to be contained.  Several hours of burn time are lost if candles are put directly into the sand.)  By burning candles in cups, with the cups nested firmly in the middle of the bag, you get longer time from the candle, and get a little extra protection for the candle from the wind.

Fire Safety                    Some buy our fire retardant bags.  They cost more, but are self-extinguishing.  Others buy non-fire retardant bags.  Either way, fire safety must be stressed.  Flammable bags are normally safe enough when placed on the curb far enough away from dead or dormant grass or anything else that could catch fire.  Whether fire retardant or flammable bags are used, luminaria programs are for adults.  Luminarias should be looked at frequently, both for enjoyment and for fire safety.

Folding the Bag Tops    Some fold over the bag edges to add strength and reduce the chance of bags crumpling in the wind or, for non-fire-retardant bags, catching on fire, others don’t because of the time.  It seems most do not fold.

Lighting the Candles      We’ve heard of everything being used from blowtorches to matches.  Long lighters are on the market that are easier to use than matches, and good for many candles.

Sand                            Most use 1 - 2 cups of sand per bag. (Some use dirt.)  Most hardware stores sell sand in 50 pound bags.  Larger quantities are often purchased by the truckload. (See “Sand” in the Yellow Pages.)

Set Up                          Some deliver materials to each home; some have crews to set up and light all luminarias; and others have participants pick up their supplies at a common area.

Spacing                        The range seems to be 3 to 10 feet apart, with 6 to 10 feet the most common.  Many people use every or every-other stress-crack in the sidewalk for uniform spacing.

Timing                          Christmas Eve is the tradition, though many plan programs earlier or later because of Christmas vacations.  Some have a two-night program, either blowing out candles the first night to save them for the second, or buying candles to use each night.

Many neighborhoods have a back-up date in case the weather interferes with the primary date.

PS: Comments and suggestions are appreciated and will be incorporated to help others with their luminaria programs.
